Character Bios

We’ve posted an exciting new addition to the website: John’s bios for many of the characters in Honeydripper, ranging from Tyrone ‘Pinetop’ Purvis to Zeke, the liquor truck driver. It’s a great resource for learning about the story and setting, as well as the writing process.

Individual character bios are linked off the Cast page, or you can browse through all of them in the Character Bios category. More bios will be posted in the next few days.

  2. My husband and I and another couple saw this film at the Detroit Institue of Arts this weekend and loved it! We’re still trying to figure out who some of the ‘fictitious” characters are - Obviosly the blind guitar player-ghost is Robert Johnson, the fake Guitar Sam seems to be Chuck Berry. At any rate, it’s a wonderful film and everyone who saw it with us loved it. The audience clapped when it was over!

There are a lot of subtle references to people and situations in the American South in the 1950’s.

  3. I attended the master class with John and Maggie in Huntsville, Alabama February 8. The two hours was packed with insightful information as John and Maggie answered questions about their film-making history.

Of the tools I gained from the class I think this idea of writing separate character biographies is the one I needed most. It sounds like a great way to get a handle on organizing a story based on real historical characters without having to “tell everything.”

I am so glad to see the character biographies here on the website. They enhance my appreciation of the nuances of character in the movie.
