John Sayles Feted at Aero in Los Angeles

The American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre will host a special retrospective and tribute to filmmaker John Sayles, taking place the weekend of January 4 through 6. For the event, there will be in-person appearances by and Q&A sessions with Sayles to go along with a selection of some of his best movies, including Lone Star, Baby, It’s You, City of Hope, Brother From Another Planet and his newest film, Honeydripper - the latter kicking off the feting.From his beginnings as a novelist and versatile screenwriter-for-hire (Jurassic Park IV is next on his plate in that regard) to his development into one of the leading voices in American independent film, Sayles has demonstrated an increasingly penetrating insight into contemporary life in his 16 films as a director. Capable of writing blue collar laborers, billionaire moguls, would-be mothers and everyone in between, Sayles presents a vision of America more varied in subject matter and tone than arguably any other working modern day filmmaker.

The Aero Theatre is located at 1328 Montana Avenue in Santa Monica.

Glover, the versatile actor whose credits include Dreamgirls, Beloved, Lethal Weapon, and To Sleep with Anger; and who is now appearing on Brothers & Sisters plays the owner of a 1950s Alabama roadhouse threatened by the rise of rock ‘n roll. The evening will include a set of live music by the astonishing Texas blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr.

MusicLink Fundraiser in Poughkeepsie, NY

The event will be held at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie, NY beginning at 6:30. It is being offered in conjunction with Dutchess Community College for Black History Month and will benefit our local MusicLink, an organization which provides free or low-cost music lessons to students who cannot afford to pay for them. From 6:30 to 7:30, there will be various performances by local musicians including Suzuki MusicLink students, local blues musicians, and the teen MusicLInk singing group. At 7:30, we will show a short video introduction prerecorded by John which will be followed by the film.

Upstate NY Premiere and Fundraiser

Schenectady native, John Sayles, will premiere his 16th feature film, Honeydripper, at the Main Stage at Proctors in Schenectady, NY on Friday, January 18, 2008 at 8:00pm. There will be a Q & A from 7:30 - 8:00 PM with John Sayles and Maggie Renzie.

Proceeds from the premiere will benefit the Capital District YMCA’s Black & Latino Achievers Program. The Black & Latino Achievers program is a nationally recognized effort that has been created to provide minority youth with the challenge and opportunity to identify their interests, discover their potential and develop their personal confidence through mentoring programs, college and business visits and on the job work programs in various fields.

The premiere will be preceded by an Arts and Blues Night reception, featuring light fare and a cash bar. The reception is from 6:00pm-7: 30pm and the movie begins at 8:00pm. Ticket prices for the event are $55 per person, with Junior Tickets (ages under 35), available at $35 per person. To purchase tickets to the event please contact Stephanie Singleman at the Capital District YMCA at 869-3500 ext. 9923.

The cost to see only the film is $10 and these tickets will also be sold at the door on January 18, 2008 prior to the Upstate NY premiere of John Sayles new film Honeydripper.

Philadelphia Premiere

The evening begins with a “Honeydripper inspired” informal cocktail reception starting at 6:30 PM. The film is at 7:30 PM followed by a Q&A with John Sayles, his producing partner Maggie Renzi and two of the films young stars Yaya DaCosta, from America’s Next Top Model and Take the Lead, and Gary Clark Jr., recently voted Best Blues Guitarist by the Austin Music Awards in his debut film role. It will all take place at International House, 3701 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia.

All proceeds from the premiere will support efforts to safeguard Scribe’s media archive of more than 200 works on film and video produced over the past 25 years by Philadelphia community organizations and individuals. These works provide an extraordinary visual record of life in Philadelphia in the late 20th and early 21st centuries and include our award-winning Precious Places, Community Visions and Youth Project documentaries.

John will introduce Honeydripper and participate in a master class with Festival Co-Director Allan Hunter in which he will discuss his lengthy career as a director and as a screenwriter on such diverse films as Piranha (1978), The Howling (1981), Breaking In (1989), directed by Bill Forsyth, and The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008) which will also receive a UK premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival.

Honeydripper receives its official UK premiere at the 2008 Glasgow Film Festival, screening at the Glasgow Film Theatre on Saturday February 16th at 8.00pm and again at Cineworld on Sunday February 17th at 6.15pm.
